Lab II Hard Drive Partitions:
Using Fdisk and Partition Magic
Purpose: Learn about Hard Drive Partitions, and Extended
Partitions
Learn the Difference between FDISK and Programs Like
Partition Magic, Boot Magic, and Drive Image.
Procedure:
Using any sources available answer the following
questions:
What is a hard disk partition?
What is an extended partition?
What is the difference between partition magic and FDISK.
Part I, Running and Using FDISK
- Boot the System and make sure
the OS and all parts of the PC work before beginning.
Note any problems, along with the number of your PC!
- See if there are any
partitions on the existing HD, by looking at my computer in Win 9X,
etc. Note any existing drives and their capacities here:

- Go to Start, Run, Command.
type FDISK.
- Look at the menu.
If there are 5 items, and the fifth item is switch drives, you have 2
or more physical hard drives installed.
- How many hard drives do you
have on your PC?
- Make sure you are on drive 1
if you have more than 1.
- Go to 4 on the menu, display
partition information.
- Write down everything that you
see.
- How many partitions, and what
kind do you have on this drive?
- Find out how many drive
letters you have on this drive. List them below:
Part II Partition Magic
- Install Partition Magic on
your PC or use the boot disk and the Partition Magic Floppy Disk.
- Start partition magic.
- How many partitions do you
have, and what type are they?
