_____________ Lab 1, Opening a PC Case and Removing and Reinstalling a CD ROM DrivePurpose: The purpose is to learn how to:Properly ground yourself Open and close a PC Case Add and remove IDE Devices Enter and Modify a BIOS setup or CMOS. Students will open the PC case, find the CD ROM, remove its power and data cables, then modify the BIOS setup, restart the PC, and then reverse the procedure. Procedure: I. Testing Verifying PC Test your PC to see that it is working properly. Start Windows 9X or otherwise check your system. Make note of all the devices present in My Computer. List any a HD, FD, CD’s or other devices present in my computer? ____________________ ________________________________________________________________ II. Removing the CD Shut down the PC if it is on. Remove the Case partially Ground yourself by touching an unpainted part of the case interior. Remove the PC power plug from the rear. Remove the power and data cable from the CD ROM Plug the PC power cable back in Reboot the PC Go into the BIOS setup and make sure no CD is present (in this case you access the BIOS with F1 and then go to IDE Devices) Save BIOS settings. Exit the BIOS. Let the OS start. Look at the devices present on the PC, hard drive, fd, etc. Do you see a CD now? List any a HD, FD, CD’s or other devices present in my computer? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Call the instructor to verify your work: Instructor __________ Instructor Comments: ______________________________________________ Shut down windows, ground yourself again. Remove the PC Power Cable from the rear. III. Reinstalling the CD ROM Physically connect the CD power and data cables back up. Make sure pin 1 is in the right position, next to the power connector, or as indicated by any numbers on the board or CD ROM. Reinstall the PC power plug. Start the PC, enter the BIOS setup and make sure the CD is properly configured in the BIOS. Save BIOS settings. Exit the BIOS. Start the OS. Check now for devices Is your CD ROM present now?
