Outline
Magnetic Storage Principles
All magnetic storage devices, such as floppy disk drives and hard disk drives, read and write data by using electromagnetism
This is produced by a magnetic field that is generated around the conductor
Data Encoding Schemes
Are techniques for encoding data for magnetic storage
Examples are:
FM - Frequency Modulation
MFM - Modified Frequency Modulation
RLL - Run Length Limited
FM - Frequency Modulation
Sometimes called Single Density encoding
Used in the earliest floppy disk drives installed in PC systems (found in the early Osborne computers)
No longer used
MFM - Modified Frequency Modulation
Minimizes the use of clock transitions, leaving more room for the data
Because it is twice as efficient as FM encoding, MFM encoding also has been called Double Density recording
RLL - Run Length Limited
Up to 50% more information on a given disk than MFM
Instead of encoding a single bit, RLL normally encodes a group of data bits at a time
Drive Installation Steps
Configure the drive
Configure the host adapter
Physically install the drive
Configure the system
Partition the drive
High-level format the drive
Install the OS if a boot drive
Cable Connectors
Sockets for Ribbon Cable 1 and 2 on Motherboard
Ribbon Cable with Adaptor
Hard Drive Connectors
Configure the Drive
Designate the drive as a master or a slave
Set SCSI ID if necessary
Terminate if necessary
Host Adapter Configuration
SCSI drives usually require a host adapter card that you must install in a bus slot like any other card
IDE drives usually have the I/O interface integrated into the system’s motherboard
Physical Installation
Some computer cases require plastic rails for the drive to slide into place
Note the length of the drive cable
Make sure you use only the screws that come with your new drive
Configure the System
IDE drives are configured in the system BIOS. Autodetect if possible
May need to enter Heads, Cylinders, and Sectors manually
SCSI drives normally follow a custom setup procedure that varies depending on the host adapter that you are using
Partition the Drive
DOS FDISK command
NT Disk Administrator
Both of above are destructive partitions (deletes all data)
Partition Magic is a non-destructive partitioning software
Formatting
Low Level not necessary for IDE
Low Level may be necessary for SCSI
High level necessary for both
DOS Format command
Floppy Disk Storage
Types of drives include
1.44 Mb 3.5 inch drive
2.88Mb 3.5 Inch Drive
720Kb 3.5 Inch Drive
1.2Mb 5.25 Inch Drive
360Kb 5.25 Inch Drive
Cleaning Floppy Drives
Typically not needed very often
Simple head-cleaning kits available from computer- or office-supply stores
Use a cleaning swab with a liquid such as pure alcohol or trichloroethane
