Course: TS1000 - Introduction to Computers
Credits: 4.5-quarter hours

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course provides students with the basic understanding of computer equipment and procedures that the student will encounter in a work environment. Students gain practical knowledge of computing with hands-on use of word processing and using the Internet.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:
1. Demonstrate by written testing knowledge of computer concepts and terminology with respect to hardware, software, applications, systems, the Internet and World Wide Web.
2. Demonstrate word processing ability by completing lab assignments of tasks that include creating, editing, and formatting of documents using word processing software. 
3. Demonstrate ability using a presentation graphics program by completing lab assignments and lab projects which include such tasks as creating a presentation, editing and formatting text in a presentation, and running a computerized slide show.
4. Demonstrate Internet and World Wide Web knowledge by completing lab assignments that include utilizing a web browser, sending and receiving e-mail, using search engines, and FTP. 
5. Create a written report from topics assigned as research.

4 x 3.5" HD diskettes or 1 Zip disk
Headphones (to listen to CD-ROM instructions)

LAB ASSIGNMENTS: 
Lab assignments are due one week from the assigned date. Points will be deducted for assignments that are turned in late. A grade of zero will be recorded for those assignments not submitted within one week of the due date.

GROUP PROJECT:
Students will be assigned to groups during the first two weeks of the trimester. Groups are required to create one (1) written report and class presentation on a topic to be assigned by the instructor.

ABSENTEEISM POLICY:
There are three (3) hours of unexcused absences without penalty allowed per trimester. Additional absences may result in a reduction of the final grade or withdrawal from the course with a W. 

OUTCOMES ASSESSMENT:

Assignments
Discussion/presentations on certain chapters in groups requires you read chapters BEFORE class. Other exercises as assigned.

Extra Credit 
On occasion you may be offered the opportunity to fulfill an extra or alternative credit assignment. 

Group Project
Will be given in class and full details posted here as soon as it is given. This project is usually requires you to design a Web page.
